ABB thyristor undergoes a process optimization enabling more competitive pricing

ABB Power Grids phase control thyristor has been the backbone of the high-power electronics industry since its introduction almost 50 years ago. Its cost efficiency, high reliability and superior performance has placed it at the heart of industrial applications as well as energy transmission and distribution equipment.

The production process of the powerful and well proven small size housing thyristor platform is optimized, enabling ABB to offer competitive pricing for the D and F (34 and 47 mm pole-piece diameter) housing thyristor platform with voltage ratings 1800 V to 6500 V. Target markets for these thyristors are DC drives and soft starter beside many others.

ABB was the first to market a 6-inch thyristor for HVDC applications. Today it offers the most complete range of high-power thyristors. New thyristor products are in development with focus on minimizing overall losses, maximizing performance and power rating of the device.

ABB’s product range includes press-pack devices rated 1800 V to 8500 V and 350 A to 6100 A for use in demanding applications such as HVDC, FACTS and industry. These components have set benchmark reliability records over many years.
