Dear Friends,
There are plenty of devices that are in an always-on mode for a good reason. Especially in the medical sector or servers, power disruption is oftentimes not acceptable and components need to be protected reliably.
Find all my magazines from 2006 on in our free archive on bodospower.com. There is no better way to communicate. We all share one world. As a publisher I serve the world: one magazine, on time, every time.
Best regards,
Bodo Arlt

In-rush currents can present a reliability challenge in computing hot-swap applications. Nexperia, the original pioneers of enhanced SOA, have addressed this concern by designing a portfolio of ‘ASFETs for Hotswap and Soft Start with enhanced SOA’ that are fully optimized for hotswap & in-rush applications. These new ASFETs deliver greatly improved linear-mode stability and as a result the Spirito effect (steeper downward slope in SOA curves at higher voltages and lower currents) has been eliminated from the datasheet’s SOA curve. Strong performance is maintained across the full voltage compared to unoptimized devices.
Nexperia is the first vendor to fully characterize at 125°C, as well as providing hot SOA curves within the datasheets, removing the need for designers to thermally de-rate their designs. The curves demonstrate the actual SOA capability of these new ASFETs and illustrate that their performance greatly exceeds that suggested by outdated derating theory.
Nexperia's portfolio ASFET has now been updated to include of 25V and 30V devices in LFPAK56 and LFPAK56E packages.
