LEM’s HOB-P high bandwidth current sensor

Rapid current response in a compact package

(picture lem)

High bandwidth sensing is essential when using fast-switching silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs in high-voltage pulsed-power circuits, where rapid high voltage pulses are essential.

This is what LEM’s latest range of current sensors have been designed to achieve. Offering a market-leading response time of around 150 ns, the HOB-P Series of current sensors beats the industry standard of three microseconds by a large margin – in fact, it is ten times faster than anything else on the market.

HOB-P current sensors can measure DC, AC or pulsed current up to 250 A – and with a pick-up coil on LEM’s application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), the sensor can react just like a current transformer and can perform at bandwidths above 1MHz.

At the same time, the HOB-P range is also ideal for wide band gap power electronics use cases, where immunity to the dv/dt issues experienced by SiCs is paramount.

The HOB-P sensor is also ahead of its competitors thanks to including galvanic separation between the primary and secondary circuit, an integrated busbar and a compact design that enables space-saving THT (through hole technology) PCB mounting.

When it comes to applications, solution developers will find the HOB-P is ideal for their most demanding use cases, including hand-held plasma cutters, welders and DC-DC converters.
